Teaching art to children is a very popular way artist make additional money. And when speaking to artist teachers, I find many expressing frustration when setting up and teaching classes. To the point that many talented, caring artists simply stop offering teaching after a few private pupils or classes because they don
Good article. I have tried teaching art to children and have found I would much rather paint or sketch than to teach painting or sketching. Thought it was frustrating…. I think you are right on target about parents and their budgets. These days, many feel the more a child does, the better off they will be in life. I feel if you pay attention to where they child excels, then work towards it, whether art, music or athletics. I would prefer to put my money where the talents lie. Thanks for your article!
Thank you Sheila!
Thanks so much. I woke up feeling that sort of frustration, after talking to a mom of a child who she feels has MUCH TALANT, but does not understand aesthetic scanning teaching of art, which I do.
He is only a 1st grader who knows very little but I see where he could grow and learn and improve his art skills.
How to get her to understand an artist (this kid too) need to start with the basics. The class that I was offering was to mature for him, so I immediately sought out a curriculum that fit him perfect. She decided it was too simple for him. She does not understand and now after reading your article I understand better and will follow your advice. thanks so much, you made my day better already.
DeeDee,
I’m glad I could help. Go with your instincts on teaching – you know what’s right for each child.

Mother of 7, business owner, artist, in 2016 we are opening an artist residency.
First not all artists are effective teachers. Sorry. Second, depending on the age of your
students, you should be assuming you are offering enrichment classes, not a career
path. One of the things we have to offer as an Artist residency is assistance to our adult artists
in bringing their product/skills to market. Help them with the “how to make a living part”. Keep
in mind, these are people who have chosen art as their path.
As a parent it was important to me that my children experience a wide variety of enrichment programs.
I used to hate “career day” at my kids’ school because so many of the associated projects focused on
picking something. What I have come to realize, is that everything I’ve ever done/experienced I’ve drawn
from, using it to build a successful artisan business.
We expect to offer art camps for local children once we open our doors. Every time I teach a class or
speak to students, my goal is to inspire them. Remind them there are as many ways to make a living
with art as their are artists. Give hope and energy to young people to enjoy their path and remind them
that you truly can do what you love.
